Each year, the United Overseas Bank in Singapore organizes the UOB Painting of the Year Competition and Exhibition to promote more interest in local arts, as well as encourage and recognise local artists for their work.

This year, I’ve submitted 2 pieces for consideration in the Junior Section of the 27th UOB Painting Of The Year Competition. This will be the second year I’ve submitted something for the event. Unfortunately, nothing so far. Mum and Dad say its alright.. the experience gained is the prize in itself.

My second piece is titled simply as “Cats“. The painting shows a scene in which three cats of varying sizes and pelt colours are peering at a realistic-looking model of a tree on a sandy hilltop, More toy cats are resting and basking in the sun, enjoying its warmth. The main theme of this art piece is cats. I wanted to capture the curious nature of cats, their ability to climb trees and balance on narrow branches, as well as their love of the sun’s warmth. The United Overseas Bank organizes the UOB Painting of the Year Competition and Exhibition annually to promote more interest in local arts, as well as encourage and recognise local artists for their work.

Last year, the school suggested that I submit one of my canvas pieces to the 26th UOB Painting Of The Year Competition. A very exciting time, I tell you!

The Panda

The Panda

This was one of my first pieces of work on canvas and although I am fairly pleased with it, there is room for improvement as i learn more about the different techniques of painting with acrylic on canvas. This is also the first time any of my work has been submitted to a competition. Most art work we did in Australia is usually put up as some display somewhere in the school so that everyone could take a look.

Mum and Dad were excited to say the least.. since the only competent drawing they could come up with were stick figures and not very good ones at that.. or so they claim. I’ve seen Dad doodle a little but he likes geometric shapes and this one little ‘cartoony‘ figure that he calls his mascot. Haven’t seen them draw anything else so I don’t know if they are really as bad as they claim or if they are any good.

I named the piece simply as “The Panda”. I remember doing a project in class the year before about moon pandas in captivity and how they were caged and bred for their bile until they eventually died from disease. Felt really sad about their plight especially after some of the research we had to read and the videos we had to watch. The painting was meant to capture pandas before they died out in the wild. I pictured it holding a bamboo branch not only to show what it ate but to signify a ‘peace‘ offering from the panda to mankind.

Here’s a close-up. Click on the thumbnail to get to the larger sized photo.

I’m preparing 2 paintings this year for the Junior Section of the 27th UOB Painting Of The Year Competition. This annual competition and exhibition is organized by the United Overseas Bank in Singapore to help promote more interest in the local arts, as well as encourage and recognise local artists for their work.

I sent something in last year but did not manage to get anything :(

Garden of the Hummingbirds

Garden of the Hummingbirds

.

This painting is called “Garden of the Hummingbirds“. A garden scene at dawn is depicted. The sun has just risen and hummingbirds of different sizes and colours are gathering nectar from the tiger lilies in the garden. I’ve intertwined the stems of the tiger lilies to symbolise strength in cooperation. This piece was inspired by the innocence of hummingbirds in a garden, as well as the beauty and elegance of nature’s flora.

Putting up some pics of a past event I took part in. The Esplanade had organised the Visual Arts exhibition from 29 September 2007 to 02 January 2008. As part of the exhibition, Studio Haroobee, put up an art installation as part of the exhibition. The installation also featured a number of articles I wrote as part of the Young Journalists Program. These articles featured June Goh, the founder of Studio Haroobee as well as a number of the artists who contributed to the Boxed Out III exhibits.
